Utilitarism: Its Bases, Practical Applications and Opposition to Faith
ABSTRACT: Utilitarianism was a morality elaborated in the 18th and 14th centuries, by Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill, proposing that the only rule that governs decisions, judgments and acts must be satisfaction, that is, the happiness of the individual. Any possibility of suffering or pain is also abhorred. Thus, for utilitarianism, actions are good when they promote happiness and bad when they promote suffering. In this morality, man is the center of decisions and uses his parameters to determine the good and the bad. The utilitarian perspective is present in contemporary times, being used for decisions in the legal, social and even individuality by some Christians. Because it is a morality based on and focused on man, it becomes an opposition to the Christian faith, since God and His Word must lead to the morality of Jesus' disciples.
